TUCSON, Ariz. – Dave Heeke, University of Arizona vice president and director of athletics, has appointed Matthew Hayes as chief financial officer and senior associate athletics director of internal operations, including the sporting authority of Arizona Football. Hayes spent the last two years as Chief of Staff and Associate AD for the Arizona Football Administration, overseeing strategic and day-to-day operations and finances for the program.
“We are excited to welcome Matthew to a new and pivotal role within our athletics department,” said Heeke. “It is critical to our day-to-day operations that we leverage his expertise and experience to continue our department’s drive for excellence and fulfill our mission of developing student-athletes into academic, athletic and lifelong champions. Matthew has had a tremendous impact on our football program and we look forward to bringing him to this new position.”
Hayes is a dynamic leader with a holistic vision of business operations and brings over 16 years of finance and operations experience. He brings to Arizona Athletics a unique combination of business acumen from the private sector and expertise in professional and collegiate sports. His diversified professional background includes biotechnology, e-commerce, real estate, and professional and college football.

With a passion for sports, Hayes served in the XFL and college football at the University of Arizona. He originally entered the ranks of the football profession as a coach at Bellevue High School outside of Seattle, Washington. After graduating from college, he coached for five seasons.
A native of Franklin, Massachusetts, he attended Bridgewater State University where he was a student-athlete who competed in both indoor and outdoor football and track and field. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance. Hayes also has an MBA from the University of Washington. Matthew and his wife, Erika, currently reside in Tucson, Arizona and have a son, Weston.
