gov. Justice Unveils 2023 West Virginia Vacation Guide

“Every year I am excited to see what the Department of Tourism has to say about this piece of print,” said Governor Justice. “This leader takes the cake. In addition to the innovative cover, the guide contains a wealth of information and is simply beautiful to look at. I plan to send a copy to all my friends and family and you should too!”

West Virginia is the first state to have a lenticular cover design – by simply picking up the printed guide and sliding it back and forth, the would-be traveler is presented with an image taken from inside a tent in Watoga State Park. The cover photo changes from a beautiful daytime view of a campground in International Dark Sky Park to a starry night sky.

“Choosing which location to feature on the cover of the guide each year is a decision our team carefully considers,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “Watoga State Park was one of three state parks in West Virginia to be recognized as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association in late 2021, and we wanted to celebrate that honor in a big way. Next time you visit Watoga, be sure to check out neighboring Calvin Price State Forest and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park for their internationally recognized dark skies.”

The 2023 Holiday Guide has been created in partnership with Dotdash Meredith, a leading publisher who also publishes Southern Living, Real Simple and Parents magazines. This spring, more than 100,000 West Virginia vacation guides will be included in subscription copies of Travel + Leisure magazine to encourage travel to the Mountain State, in addition to the 200,000 guidebooks the department plans to distribute directly to consumers.

The 2023 Holiday Guide features undiscovered places, world-class outdoor adventures and bustling small towns. Readers will also find a field guide at the beginning of the book with a collection of shorter stories, a travel-style quiz, and more. Most of the book is organized by season; Travelers will find beautiful pictures and everything they need to know about the time of year they want to visit West Virginia along with the activities they can enjoy.

“We have the special pleasure of inspiring people to dream of their next vacation and long for it to be almost in heaven,” said Ruby. “This guide does just that and also serves as a helpful resource once travelers get it here. Order your copy today and use it to guide you to places in West Virginia yet to be discovered.”
