Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, on Sunday, March 26, advised Russians to download pirated films in a bid to “bankrupt” US streaming service Netflix.
“You know what? Look for the right pirates and download from them. When they’re gone, all these Netflixes and others, then we download everything and use it for free. And I would spread it all over the network to do them maximum damage, maximum damage to bankrupt them!” Medvedev said in an interview with Russia’s state-affiliated agency Vcontacts, TASS and other.
Over the past year, a number of well-known Hollywood and Silicon Valley companies have stopped supporting the streaming or airing of Russian state-owned content.
US firms have raised concerns about “spreading Russian propaganda” and “disinformation” related to military activities in neighboring Ukraine. Apple, Netflix, TikTok, Facebook’s parent company, Meta, and dozens of other companies have either distanced themselves or been banned from doing business in Russia.
According to the Moscow timesNetflix entered Russia in December and was asked to comply with an ordinance requiring the streaming service to carry Russian state TV channels – Channel One – as well as Russian Orthodox Church channels in Russia.
The former Russian president stressed that Russian residents have the freedom to download and distribute illegal versions of Netflix films over the Internet. He alluded to films that weren’t available in Russia because western rights holders refused to air them.
Medvedev has criticized the unexpected removal of films and music, particularly certain Western music, from Russian websites in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Medvedev has previously stated that Russia could not lose the ongoing battle because it would “disappear” and be torn to pieces. “If Russia abandons the military special operation without achieving victory, Russia would disappear and be crushed.”
“The conflict will end when the US stops supplying arms to the Kiev dictatorship,” he added in a Telegram post.
