Now you will realize that the series is actually set in North Carolina but the movies are set in South Carolina. This is due to multiple regions, including Netflix’s initial objection to the bathroom bill.
Outer Banks reportedly has an episode budget of around $5 million per episode.
On February 14, 2022, Valerie Weiss confirmed on Instagram that filming began on February 15, with a post captioned:
“Big love to my @obx family as they start filming season 3 tomorrow!!!! See you soon!”
There were also a lot of posts from cast members on set. We’ll keep you updated throughout the production with all the behind-the-scenes pictures that emerge.

Why the delay in renewal? Well, we don’t officially know why the renewal took so long, but we can look back at previous renewals that have taken some time to find the reason.
With big casts like Outer Banks, salary negotiations almost certainly come into play. After season 2 of different shows we saw big salary negotiations for shows like 13 reasons why, I have neverand on my block.
Speaking to Decider shortly after the Season 2 premiere, Jonas Pate said of the show’s future, “My answer is as long as we can keep doing it well and we’re still excited. That’s the number. Definitely more than three.”
In early December, Chase Stokes expressed in an interview that he was hopeful but unaware of renewal:
“We have such a talented writing team, so we always let them make up the story. And every time we get a script it just blows our seats, so I’m just looking forward to getting my hands on it when Netflix hopefully gives us the green light,” he said in December 2021. We always wait still patient , just sit back and try to figure out when it will happen or if we don’t get the call if they will call us so you know. … We’re kind of in limbo right now. Obviously the fans want it, we want to do it, so we’ll see if the timing is right, but fingers crossed.”
What to Expect from Season 3 of Outer Banks on Netflix
If the show is renewed, we can expect the series to continue to take many twists, as we’re used to seeing in the first 20 episodes now.
Let’s briefly recap Season 2 of Outer Banks and where that will take us in Season 3.
The war between the Camerons and the Pogues will likely continue, with Pope likely looking to retrieve the now stolen gold cross. Fleeing the big ship, Pope says “it’s not over yet” as they take refuge on a remote deserted island. They decide to stay on the island, but chances are they won’t stay long, especially since their family has reported them missing.
Pope will likely continue to explore his family’s connection to the Santo Domingo Cross.
Ward Cameron notably faked his death in Season 2 and is now trying to live off the radar. After some clashes towards the end of a second season with John B sparing his life, it’s likely Ward will continue to play a key role in the ongoing conflict, but will he get caught?
The biggest question in Season 3 is how and why Big John is back. He appears to be implying that he knows where Denmark’s cross is but has been given the diagnosis ‘half dead’. What influence will he have in the future? We have to wait.
What have the cast and crew teasing for a third season? Here is a summary:
Regarding Big John, Josh Pate told EW:
“John B’s relationship with his father is a big issue and when his father comes back they will eventually meet again and John B will have to reconcile his idealized version of his dead father with the reality of his living father. It gives us a lot of themed father-son stuff to work with.”
Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke have also said that while the Pogues are down, they’re certainly not out, hinting they’ll be back in the hunt for gold immediately.
Regarding the romantic situation in Season 3, Madelyn Cline told ET that hopefully we’ll learn more about their marriage saying:
“It would be really fun to see them actually start to really get to know each other in a very real way in Season 3, if we get one. They are married but don’t really know much about each other. I think that would be really fun. They’ve obviously been through a lot together.”
Chase Stokes teased EliteDaily that the new season would have a “mood shift” in Season 3, saying, “The writers really like to keep us on our toes, and I think that creates performances that capture you in the moment … I have no idea what.” going on after what we shot in Barbados,” he added. “I think a lot of loose ends will come together. Many questions will be answered. And as usual, these children will be put through their paces.”
When is the Outer Banks Season 3 Netflix release date?
There is currently no official Netflix release date for Outer Banks Season 3.
However, thanks to the production schedule of previous seasons, we can already speculate as to when we’ll see the next season land.
The second season of Outer Banks was filmed between August 2020 and April 2021 before being released four months later in late July 2021. If a similar schedule is followed and there are no delays or issues with the shooting schedule, chances are we’ll see Season 3 on Netflix December 2022. At least we expect to see Outer Banks return over February 2023.
More Outer Banks news since Season 2
Off the show, you may have heard that Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes were dating, but that relationship seems to have gone sour.
Fans of the show wanting more will definitely want to check out the re-release Outer Banks Book titled Lights Out by author Alyssa Sheinmel. The book takes place just before season 1 of the main series.
What you can expect from the book:
“It’s spring break in the Outer Banks and the islands are teeming with wealthy tourists. The last thing JJ and John B want to do is spend their week watching Kooks in action, so they plan a fishing trip to the notoriously dangerous Frying Pan Shoals – dubbed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for good reason.”
