Why England can beat Ukraine
The Three Lions are the fifth ranked team in the world. English Premier League stars dominate the squad led by Harry Kane. Less than two months after becoming the top scorer in Tottenham Hotspur history, Harry Kane is now the sole top scorer in England with 54 goals, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s midweek winner against Italy. It was the Three Lions’ first win in Italy since 1961, putting them at the top of the group. That should give them a confidence boost at the start of this qualifying campaign.
The Three Lions have already assumed their role as leaders in Group C. Ahead of North Macedonia, who scored away goals after one game, England head to Wembley for their 11th home win in EURO qualifiers, having won in 10 such encounters since drawing 2-2 with Switzerland in 2011.
Gareth Southgate and company are only playing their second game this year after the World Cup. They led Group B of the 2:22 World Cup, beating Iran and Wales while they held the United States to a goalless draw. They reached the knockout rounds and made it easy with Senegal before losing to potential finalists and 2018 world champions France.
Just a minute after being booked for a long throw-in, Luke Shaw received his suspension order for a tackle against Retegui, leaving Ben Chilwell to cover for the absent Manchester United man here. A worrying sight for Borussia Dortmund fans, Jude Bellingham limped off the field late and needs to be assessed ahead of this competition. Meanwhile, Reece James has retired while continuing to assess an ongoing injury problem.
Given the quick turnaround from their flight home, Southgate could consider a few more changes, with Kieran Trippier, Jordan Henderson and Phil Foden being considered for starts.
Why Ukraine can beat England
Ukraine is 26th in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking. Ukraine narrowly missed qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, losing to a Gareth Bale-inspired Wales in an emotional UEFA play-off final.
Before retiring in January, then-coach Oleksandr Petrakov coached Ukraine through a mediocre season in the UEFA Nations League. Ukraine had an inconsistent run in their Nations League season last year. She easily defeated Armenia 3-0 and 5-0 but took just one point from two games against Scotland and four points from two games against Ireland. Ukraine finished second to Steve Clarke and Scotland in their group in League B – and failed to regain promotion to League A.
Ukraine will need their groove having not played since September’s Nations League. Bookmarks and analysts predict the blue and yellow are unlikely to cause too many problems for England in the capital after last losing 4-0 in the quarter-finals of the last European Championship. However, the Ukrainians have some talented footballers available for this game.
Under the temporary tutelage of 41-year-old caretaker Ruslan Rotan – a former 100 international – Ukraine begin their quest to qualify for the Euros for a fourth straight season. They are divided into Group C, which includes top-flight teams such as England, Italy, North Macedonia and Malta.
Ukraine will look to Mykhailo Mudryk and captain Oleksandr Zinchenko to set the tone as they begin their campaign to qualify for Germany next summer. The 22-year-old winger has yet to live up to expectations for Chelsea but is still a threat to England’s defence, while Zinchenko brings plenty of experience to the table. Everton defender Vitalii Mykolenko is another young signing looking to make a name for himself. Andriy Lunin, 24, has kept three clean sheets in six games with Real Madrid and is the heir apparent to superstar goalie Thibaut Courtois at the Spanish giants.
Ukraine captain Andriy Yarmolenko is doubtful with a hamstring problem. First-choice central defender Illya Zabarnyi, Yukhym Konoplya and goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk were all injured.
