Italy’s Jonathan Milan of Bahrain Victorious won the second stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday after crossing the finish line in the final sprint of the 202-kilometer ride from Teramo to San Salvo. After Remco Evenepoel wiped out the competition in Saturday’s opening time trial, stage two was a chance for the sprinters, while points were also at stake for the climbers.
The track’s home stretch was a kilometer long and a number of riders were preparing to sprint, with Alpecin-Deceuninck leading the way while Ramon Sinkeldam moved into the last lead to give his teammate Kaden Groves the upper hand. Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) were also battling for the lead but Milan put their heads down and pedaled hard in the final 100 meters to claim victory after almost five hours of cycling.
