City seeks artist to create mural for Mountainside Pool

The city is seeking expressions of interest from professional artists or teams of artists to create a mural. The mural is for a large exterior wall as part of the Mountainside Pool Revitalization Project.

This is a two-tier competition. In Phase One, artists submit their qualifications and an expression of interest. In phase two, three artists will be shortlisted to create a full design proposal. Shortlisted artists will receive a fee of $1,500 to create their design proposals.

A Citizens’ Advisory Council made up of local artists, residents and stakeholders explored the project’s goals and themes. Artists are invited to comment on one or more aspects of the project goals as determined by the Mountainside Pool Mural Steering Committee.

Who can apply?

This competition is open to professional artists or artist teams. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to oversee the design, manufacture, and installation of a large-scale mural in a public space. The selected artist/team of artists must be available for meetings with project staff and the steering committee. We encourage submissions from artists from equal groups, including 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, Black, and racist artists, as well as deaf and disabled artists.

Goals of the “Mountainside Pool Mural” project:

  • Create a contemporary, professional mural that welcomes families and pool users
  • Reflect a spirit of inclusion, community building and belonging
  • Demonstrate an understanding of or connection to the Mountainside community
  • Celebrate the unique natural setting surrounding the facility; Mountainside is a neighborhood in a natural setting (e.g. wooded lot, connections to Niagara Escarpment, etc.)
  • Artists are encouraged to explore ways to integrate community engagement into their project design (not mandatory).

Mountainside Pool Revitalization Project

The Mountainside Pool revitalization project is scheduled for completion in spring 2023. Once the revitalization is complete, the facility will be a fun and inviting multipurpose outdoor swimming pool, inviting the community to get involved and experience swimming and water features while encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.

Chris Glenn, Director of Recreation, Community and Culture

“This mural will be a great way to welcome families and pool users to Mountainside Pool. Mountainside Pool is part of a larger complex that includes a recreation center with an arena, community room and youth program. All are welcome to enjoy this complex and the large park surrounding the pool and recreation center. Public art here will help support our community connection.”

Angela Paparizo, Manager of Arts and Culture

“Mountainside Pool serves as an important community hub and neighborhood hangout. One of the project goals for this mural is to reflect a spirit of inclusion, community building and belonging. This mural will add great value to our community’s culture and enhance the experience of all who participate in this space.”
