Chennai Super Kings acquire Texas franchise in US Major League Cricket

One of the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League history, Chennai Super Kings has acquired another team and bought the Texas franchise, which competes in USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC). The news was confirmed by the four-time IPL winners on their official social media profile.

“Show our NRI cousin, @TeamTexasMLC, something yellow! 🤠 #HowdyTexas #MajorLeagueCricket,” it tweeted after an earlier tweet that said a big announcement is coming soon.

It’s important to note that in the MLC competition, up to six teams – San Francisco Unicorns, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle Orcas and Washington DC excluding Texas – will compete for ultimate glory. This year the tournament is scheduled to start on July 13th.

Texas isn’t the only team in MLC to be acquired by an IPL franchise. Previously, Delhi Capitals also bought a stake in the Seattle team as the IPL teams are interested in expanding their football in the T20 ecosystem. The franchise’s Delhi-based co-owners, GMR Group, have partnered with investors like Microsoft’s Satya Nadela for a stake in the Seattle side of MLC.

Aside from the IPL teams mentioned above, it has also been claimed that the Kolkata Knight Riders may have bought the Los Angeles side while the Mumbai Indians were interested in New York.

As for the immediate future, franchises will be keeping an eye on IPL 2023 knocking on the door with the money-rich league set to start on March 31st. It will be the Chennai Super Kings who will take on the Gujarat Titans in the first game of the season at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
