The May 24 event opened the theater’s 60th anniversary season of Free Shakespeare in the Park.

Off-Broadway’s The Public Theater hosted its Gala on the Green on May 24 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The event featured a series of performances by stage graduates such as Renée Elise Goldsberry, Oscar Isaac, Norm Lewis, Kimber Elayne Sprawl and the Jina Brass Band and Rich Medina.

The start for the Free Shakespeare in the Park season celebrating the 60th as Richard III. in this summer’s production of Shakespeare in the Park.

Meg Zervoulis acted as the evening’s musical director. Gil Shiva of the Susan Stein Shiva Foundation and Jamie Maleszka, director of creative arts at the Fortune Society, were both honored at the gala.

“This year’s Gala feels special as we celebrate 60 years of sharing incredible artistry with all of New York through one of the summer’s most treasured traditions, Free Shakespeare in the Park,” added Executive Director Patrick Willingham. “New York City’s arts and culture organizations are moving forward with hope and commitment to a vibrant and just future despite the challenges of the pandemic, and we are particularly proud to be making great progress on our plan to revitalize The Delacorte during this anniversary year.” . It is a special moment as we ensure The Delacorte will continue to thrive and serve New Yorkers for generations to come.”
