“We want to add a little pizzazz.”
So said Sarah Barr, executive director of the Avalon Theater, 121 S. Main, of the Avalon Summer Film Series, which turns Wednesdays in the Uptown District into a movie night as the Avalon will be projecting 10 films on the big screen over the course of Summer for Two Shows every Wednesday, one at 3pm and the second at 7pm
After a social media poll and soliciting comments from the public on which films to screen for the Avalon Summer Film Series, an eclectic mix of films was selected to appeal to all tastes this summer, with titles running the gamut should cover from cult classics like The big Lebowskito the song and dance film West Side Story, to the hilariously absurd Airplane!to the oldest film on the list (and the only black-and-white film) featuring the marvelous roman vacationstarring a red hot Audrey Hepburn.
Pushing for the Wednesday Summer Movie Series to be an event, Ms. Barr has been scheming to include other uptown and Union County businesses in the movie night, while working with local breweries and wineries to maybe host a night of beer- and host wine tastings, food trucks invite people to stop by between shows and maybe even dress up as a favorite Marvel character on opening night, in a nod to Spider-Man, who will grace the big screen with his presence that day.
The concession stand will be operational for all shows – what’s the point of going to the movies without getting popcorn and raisinettes? – plus whatever else Ms. Barr and her crew can come up with to make the experience even greater.
Tickets for each of the shows are $5 — yes, you read that right, $5 — and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis only. Since the Avalon seats 250 in total, you might want to get there a little early if you really, really want to see it Stand by Me On the big screen.
Again, showing times for the Avalon Summer Film Series from June 1 through August 10 are every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. except for the week of July 4th.
