Netflix has announced the release date for its upcoming film Aviary Barcelonaan upcoming Spanish-language spin-off set in the same universe as the 2018 film.
Aviary Barcelona will be available to stream on Netflix on July 14th. The streamer teased the upcoming horror thriller with an announcement trailer, in which it asked audiences if they’re “ready to watch… again?”. The new film, written and directed by Álex Pastor and David Pastor, is described as an “expansion” of the first film. The official synopsis for Aviary Barcelona reads as follows: “After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must master his own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to flee the city, things get unexpected and an even more sinister threat grows.”
Aviary Barcelona is expected to be the first of many local-language spin-offs set in the same universe. The film, which has been in development since 2021, is Netflix’s second installment birdhouse Franchise based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman. Susanne Bier directed the 2018 adaptation of Malerman’s book, which follows the character Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, who tries to protect herself and two children from entities that cause people looking at them to kill themselves. Although birdhouse received mixed reviews from critics and became the most watched film on Netflix at the time with 282 million hours watched within the first 28 days of release.
Bird Box 2 is still on the way
In addition to Aviary Barcelona and other local language spinoff films, Netflix is developing a proper sequel to the first film. No plot or cast details are available at this time. It’s also unknown if the sequel will tell an original story or adapt the events of Malerman’s 2020 novel Maloriewhich records 12 years later birdhouse. The novel focuses on Malorie and her now-adolescent children, who learn that Malorie’s parents may still be alive and living in a different community of survivors.
Aviary Barcelona stars 2022 breakout stars Diego Calva (Babylon) and Georgina Campbell (barbarian). The rest of the ensemble consists of Mario Casas, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia.
birdhouse Producers Dylan Clark and Chris Morgan return for the Spanish-language film along with Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls for Nostromo Pictures. Executive producers include Susanne Bier, Josh Malerman, Ryan Lewis, Ainsley Davies for Chris Morgan Productions and Brian Williams for Dylan Clark Productions.
