Two young women were tragically killed on holiday while celebrating their upcoming birthdays with their friends.

Theresia Jansson Palmer and Annika Frankendale, who described each other as their best friend, were eagerly awaiting their 25th birthday – just days to go – when they were caught in an avalanche in the Italian Alps bordering France and Switzerland , Am Sunday afternoon.

At the time, they had been skiing with their unnamed friends, who survived the tragic avalanche, according to local media.

The group had previously been based in Chamonix on the French side of Mont Blanc, but on the day of their deaths the women and their partners – all experienced skiers – had reportedly gone to Courmayeur to head towards Val Veny.

Investigators are investigating whether bad weather caused the friends to take the wrong route, leading them to the “very steep and dangerous” Spagnoli Channel, reports local publication Corriere Della Sera.

One of the women was rescued from the snow by the two men, but they were unable to revive her. The other was found the following day after search and rescue teams had to halt their efforts due to adverse weather conditions.

Ms Palmer and Ms Frankendale were students at Lunds Teknisha Hoskola, the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University in Lund, Sweden, specializing in industrial design and sports.

Ms. Palmer studied engineering physics, loved to play soccer and practiced her skiing whenever she had the opportunity, the publication reports. Ms. Frankendale’s passions included running and sailing.
