1. Brave
Released in 2020, Valorant is a competitive, character-based 5v5 FPS where Operators combine their gunplay with unique abilities. With more than 20 agents to choose from, spread across four roles, team composition makes the difference. You’ll need to choose your agent carefully, but if you’re new to the game we recommend taking a look at our Valorant leaderboard first.
Since the average match without a rating or Valorant leaderboard lasts around 40 minutes, the game also offers various other modes like Swiftplay and Spike Rush if you want a faster experience.
With new content released every season – whether it’s a new map or a new agent, Valorant is one of the best competitive FPS games and perfect for new players.
Valorant is only available on PC.
2. Surveillance 2
Overwatch 2 is one of the most popular free shooter games out there right now, largely due to the way the original game defined the hero shooter genre all those years ago.
Despite being another game where you choose heroes that combine gunplay and abilities to your advantage, Overwatch 2 emphasizes teamwork and team composition in its now 5v5 layout. With 30+ heroes divided into tank, DPS and support roles, players can customize their team’s lineup to counter their enemies. Our Overwatch 2 leaderboard explains more.
Whether you decide to take on the ranks of Overwatch 2 or play casually in Quick Play or Arcade, the game offers a unique gaming experience for fans of the FPS genre.
Overwatch 2 is available on all major platforms.
3. Infinity halo
Although the first installment in the Halo franchise, Halo: Combat Evolved was released in 2001, the series has proven itself for the FPS genre. Since then, the franchise has evolved and eight more games have been released in the last twenty years, including Halo Infinite.
This 2021 game features an expansive open world for you to enjoy, as well as new gadgets to try out and a range of vehicles for you to control. The game’s campaign is stunning (something you can read more about in our Halo Infinite review) and will keep you entertained for hours.
The multiplayer is free to play and offers dozens of popular game modes as well as Forge.
Halo Infinite is available for PC and Xbox.
4. Apex Legends
Featuring perhaps the most diverse cast of characters in the FPS genre, Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale traditionally pitted against teams of three.
Like other hero-based shooters on this list, Apex features over 20 Legends, each with their own set of abilities and ultimates. While all are viable in advancing the Apex Legends ranks, newcomers may want to pick those from the top of the Apex Legends leaderboard to get the most out of their games.
The game is regularly updated and offers a whole range of extras, from time-limited game modes, cosmetics and events. It’s undoubtedly one of the best battle royale games out there and one that you should try.
Apex Legends is available on all major platforms.
5. Eternal destiny
We can’t have a list of the best FPS games without a Doom title, right? Doom Eternal takes everything we loved about the 1993 original and improves it to give the series a sleek new finish.
You still have to shoot everything on location with metal music playing in the background, but this time you can cycle through a wide range of weapons and travel through several different environments.
In addition to an exciting single player campaign, Doom Eternal also features a multiplayer mode called Doom Slayer. It’s a must have for anyone who loves old school FPS games.
Doom Eternal is available on all major platforms.
6. Destiny 2
Bungie’s hit FPS game is perfect for fans of space, gunplay, and a whole lot of lore. With a narrative that’s still developing from the original game, there’s a lot to take care of. But once you get the hang of it, it’s an excellent story-driven game.
If that’s not your thing, then don’t worry. Destiny 2 features great gunplay, puzzles and secrets, and a solid PvP mode to test your skills in.
However, newcomers should check out our Best Destiny 2 Warlock Build, Destiny 2 Titan Build, and Destiny 2 Fighter Build before starting their first raid.
Destiny 2 is available for PC, Xbox and PS4/5.
7. Call of Duty: Warzone 2
A list of the best FPS games wouldn’t be complete without a Call of Duty game, so we chose Warzone 2, a free to play battle royale. Here 150 players enter Al Mazrah to be crowned the last survivor.
With a second chance feature offered by the Gulag – a 1v1 arena – and events like Jailbreak that put all dead players back in the game, you have multiple chances of success. Loadout Drops allow you to gather your resources and pick up the best Warzone 2 weapons, and Supply Crates let you pick up things like Ammo and Killstreaks.
Warzone 2 is a fast-paced battle royale with realistic gunplay. It’s arguably one of the most popular battle royale games out there, and one of the best to play with friends.
You can play Warzone 2 on all major platforms.
8. Escape from Tarkov
Set in a world where a war is taking place between two private military companies, Escape from Tarkov is a tactical FPS game about survival.
You choose to enter one of many Escape From Tarkov maps in a single raid and loot your way to victory. Loot is an important component in this hardcore extraction shooter, but as you battle other players and the AI for resources, you’ll soon discover that the lands of Tarkov are very dangerous indeed.
Escape From Tarkov is perfect for FPS players who like to think about strategy. Whether you’re playing in a team or solo, you need to stay ahead of your opponents to stay alive and extract. You can hone your skills as a Scav, which also allows you to build up your stockpile of gear for your main characters, but be aware that no matter how you play the game, it’s difficult.
Escape From Tarkov is only available on PC, although a spin-off title will be released soon that should cater to the desire of competitive players. Find out more in our Escape From Tarkov Arenas release date guide.
9. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
CS:GO is one of the oldest FPS games on this list, but that hasn’t slowed it down at all. A hugely popular competitive title, CS:GO is a 5v5 tactical FPS where players divided into either Counter-Terrorists or Terrorists must plant a bomb or defend a location to gain the upper hand.
Team play and communication are important here, as each team must work together to attack one of two locations, announce the location of enemy players, and split their in-game money earned over the course of 30 rounds to purchase better weapons.
While the game can be played casually, most players play competitively to work their way up the CS:GO ranks, which gets them into more difficult matches over time.
CS:GO is only available on PC.
10. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
This online tactical FPS allows players to choose from a variety of operators (each with unique weapons and gadgets) in this 5v5 competitive game. You must work as a team to both attack and defend set areas to win rounds.
While this sounds a bit like CS:GO, in Siege you have several different abilities at your disposal, and the defending team can fortify their locations to make the attacking team’s position more difficult.
This, of course, puts an emphasis on destruction, so you’ll need to watch your six if you want to stay alive. The added elements of roaring and roping will keep you on your toes, especially when enemies are using the best Rainbow Six Siege operators in the game.
