Back by popular demand: “The Secret Comedy of Women” returns to the Herberger Theater Center

Through April 2nd, audiences have one more chance to enjoy this comedic cinema adaptation that celebrates the relatable and hilarious experiences of growing up, aging and laughing at life as a woman.

“The Secret Comedy of Women,” a laughable, immersive theatrical triumph about the challenges of being a woman, had such a successful four-week run in January that it’s returning to the Herberger Theater Center due to popular demand for an encore engagement.

Through April 2nd, audiences have one more chance to enjoy this comedic cinema adaptation that celebrates the relatable and hilarious experiences of growing up, aging and laughing at life as a woman.

Affectionately aimed at the female audience and the men who love it, The Secret Comedy of Women actively draws contestants in with its high-spirited, good-natured humor. The show was written by Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein, the stars of the two-woman performance are shared by Gehring, Klein and Melanie Wehrmacher.

Born from the earnest and sweetly absurd writings the two authors discovered in their real-life childhood diaries, The Secret Comedy of Women is a mix of sketch comedy, improvisation, audience participation and groundbreaking songs and videos that remind everyone of the very funny ones and very charming similarities that all women share.

“It’s really like a girls’ reunion,” Klein said. “The audience roars with laughter at everything that has ever held her back – from boys to bras and pantyhose to menopause.”

The Secret Comedy of Women has garnered a loyal following since 2008, performing to more than a quarter million theatergoers nationwide. A key to repeat visits is the element of hilarious surprise, as no two performances are ever the same. Numerous scenes of audience participation and engagement are completely improvised for each show.

“Our show is very universal, made personal. It’s appropriate for women of all ages,” added Gehring. “We were told it was like ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Carol Burnett Show’.”

The Women’s Secret Comedy runs from March 15th to April with performances on Wednesdays at 2pm, Thursdays at 2pm and 7.30pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. The Herberger Theater Center is located at 222 E. Monroe St. in Phoenix.
