Azula in the spirit temple is an upcoming comic book from Dark Horse that gives one of Avatar’s most complex characters a much-needed solo story. Since Avatar: The Last Airbender ended its run on Nickelodeon after 3 seasons, it has found new ways to continue. Aside from scorning a sequel, Avatar: The Legend of Korraand two live-action remakes, Avatar: The Last Airbender Comics have also served as the canonical continuation of the series. Dark Horse Comics has worked with Avatar Studios for over a decade to produce a series of graphic novels that serve as a direct continuation of the series. These graphic novels have taken the form of trilogies or standalone stories, exploring characters from Aang to Zuko and Toph to Suki.
The first stories were written by Gene Leung until Faith Erin Hicks took over from him. To date, she has written several stories that focus on the female characters first introduced in Avatar: The Last Airbender. So it’s not surprising that Dark Horse Comics is next Avatar: The Last Airbender Comic book written by Hicks will be a standalone story with Azula. In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Azula (Grey DeLisle) was the younger sister of Prince Zuko (Dante Basco). She had a very tragic storyline in the series as she was a gifted firebender and child prodigy who unfortunately suffered a nervous breakdown due to her paranoia and narcissism.
She has made several appearances in comics since the show ended. Initially she was held in a mental institution by Zuko, but after several attempts to escape and join him in finding her mother, she remained free and continued to demand and manipulate Zuko behind the scenes, seemingly genuinely believing that she was helping him to make a better fire Lord. Her new standalone novel Azula in the spirit templecould give her story a more satisfying ending.

Azula in the spirit temple plot

Azula in the spirit temple will pick up where the comics last left off as she is now free and continues to wreak havoc in Zuko’s reign of the Fire Nation. As said above, she has made the weak argument that her actions are helping to mold Zuko into a better leader. However, her actions are largely villainous, even including attempting to foment rebellion and dissent against Zuko. In Azula in the spirit templealthough she may finally get her compensation.
In the comic, she will launch a new attack on some aspects of the Fire Nation. When things backfire, she takes refuge in an isolated temple occupied by a monk to await the trouble she’s gotten herself into this time. But the place isn’t what it seems, forcing her to confront her past. It could also offer her what seemed almost unattainable – salvation. Check out the official synopsis below:
Azula continues her campaign of destabilization against the Fire Nation and her brother, Fire Lord Zuko. But after a failed attack on her last target, Azula finds herself in a mysterious forest temple inhabited by a lonely monk. What at first seems like a safe place to spend the night quickly turns out to be something terrifyingly different. Forced to confront her past, Azula will finally face her chance at redemption… but will she take it?
Redemption is an aspect that many fans have hoped Azula would offer. As said above, her story is quite tragic, and many of her problems can be traced back to her dysfunctional family. She was just way too young to walk the dark path she ended up walking. Therefore, Azula has always been a character that evokes sympathy among viewers. Even so, she was never too receptive to redemption. All of Zuko’s attempts to help her have resulted in her stabbing him in the back, and her stints in custody have done little to inspire remorse or reform in her. For this reason, it will be particularly interesting to see how salvation is offered to her and how she responds to it Azula in the spirit temple.
