About 60 miles north of Orlando and 80 miles southeast of Gainesville, the Central Florida Recreation area is in the northeast corner of Lake County. It is known to be one of the few first magnitude wells in Florida.

Alexander Springs is a first-magnitude spring, meaning the springhead discharges an average of approximately 100 cubic feet of water per second. That’s hundreds of liters of water!

Known as the Alexander Run, the spring run culminates in Spring Creek. The spring pool is a popular destination with beautiful palm trees, amazing water quality and an average water temperature of 22 degrees.

Alexander Springs is one of the most visited places in the Ocala National Forest. The spring is located just a few miles from the St. Johns River, off the area’s main thoroughfare, County Road 445.

There is a paved car park where you can park when you arrive. Parking spaces can fill up quickly on weekends and public holidays, so getting there early is recommended.

Alexander Springs Recreation Area has much to offer visitors. Of course, a dip in the swimming area is the most popular part of their trip for many visitors.

Additionally, yogis have been known to practice on paddleboards, and divers find this location excellent for scuba diving.

Hikers have great options here, like the Timucuan Trail, a 0.9-mile loop through a palm forest filled with cabbage palms. The area also has a trailhead with a blue marked trail that connects the area to the Florida Trail, a National Scenic Trail that is approximately 1,500 miles long.

The recreation area has a concession stand that offers limited rentals of kayaks and canoes. You can also bring your own kayak or canoe to the springs!

There is a shaded picnic area with picnic tables near the spring – the perfect place to enjoy a meal in Alexander Springs.

The recreation area is a great place for camping. It has drinking water, toilets and bathhouses. There are 67 campsites within the campgrounds, which can accommodate tents and RVs up to 35 feet, though there are no water, sewer, or electric hookups.

If you need something while camping, the concession stand sells snacks and groceries, as well as charcoal and firewood if you want to make a fire.

TIPS:

  • Alexander Springs is open daily from 8am to 8pm, but may close earlier depending on the season.
  • The most popular times to visit are the summer months, weekends and bank holidays. The site closes when capacity is reached, so it’s best to get there early and beat the crowds!

  • Black bears are frequently sighted in the Ocala National Forest. Knowing what to do when encountering a black bear is important.
  • Planning to spend a lot of time in the Ocala National Forest area? You may want to purchase the Ocala National Forest/Springs Hopper Pass. For $70 per person plus tax, the pass provides year-long access to recreation areas managed by Adventure Ocala.

The Orange Shop has been around for over 80 years. Located about 50 miles from Alexander Springs, this place is worth the trip! The store opened in 1936 and sold hand-picked seasonal fruit to travelers passing by on US 301.

Not much has changed since the Orange Shop opened – the shop offers great customer service and the best citrus around.
