After 36 holes on day one, men’s golf in third place in Tucson

second grader Preston Summerhays led the way for the No. 2/3 Arizona State Men’s Golf after two rounds on Day 1 with a 66-71=137/-7 and finished fifth on the individual rankings at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson..

Arizona State is third overall and has a day to play in the 13-team field after shooting two rounds (274-288 = 536/-14) on Day 1 in the South.

Summerhays shot an impressive 6-under 66 with seven birdies in the first round, leading the Sun Devils to first place after the first 18 holes. ASU reported results at or below the same level in the round. Jose Luis Ballester shot a 4-under 68 in the first 18 with five birdies on the card. Michael Mjaaseth finished with a 3-under 69 and pocketed Eagle on hole 4 with another four birdies.

“We were great the first 17 holes,” said the head coach Matt Thurmond. “It’s been a while since we played 36 and we definitely didn’t seem to have the emotional resilience it takes to stay sharp for so long. Overall it was a decent day and we are close to the lead on the final lap. Once again we are in the final and tomorrow will be a fun day.”

In the second round of the day, Potter made six birdies with a 1-under-71 card. Ryggs Johnston and Summerhays also posted 1-of-71 cards.

Summerhays leads the field with 28 pars while sharing fourth place with Potter for most birdies. The Sun Devils have the third most birdies of the 13 teams with 38.

The Sun Devils are one shot behind second and five shots behind first with a tag to play. All five Sun Devils scored two scoring rounds and finished in the top-45. Kiko Coelho posted a (73-71=144/-1) as an individual to land at T36.

The Sun Devils entered the clubhouse after a strong start on the first day of action. Arizona State Men’s Golf and Summerhays will look to build on Day 1 in the final round on Saturday, looking for top team and individual finishes.
