Why was Halle Bailey’s casting controversial?
When Halle Bailey, known from Chloe x Halle, was announced as lead-in The little mermaid, the actress and Disney were the victims of a major backlash rooted in racism — Bailey was black and the animated incarnation was white. Many people condemned the casting of a black mermaid as inconsistent with the original animated film, even going so far as to claim that having a black mermaid at all was historically inaccurate.

In February 2023, Bailey – who previously said she wanted to ignore the racist trolls – told The Face:
“‘It’s not about race.’ But now that I’m them…people don’t understand that when you’re black there’s this whole different community. It is so important for us to see ourselves.”
