4 new Japanese movies and series are coming to Netflix in October 2022

It may be a spooky time of year, but not every new movie and series coming to Netflix this month has to do with evil spirits and killers. If Ryan Murphy’s gruesome new series about serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer isn’t your thing, we have a list of upcoming Japanese titles that are a lot brighter (and less troublesome) to watch.

That includes the 2021 love story We Made a Beautiful Bouquet, as well as a Netflix Original anime about a girl trapped in a world of good-looking, eligible bachelors (oh, the horror!). Note that regional restrictions may apply.

(Planning a horror movie marathon for Halloween? Here’s a separate list of our favorites J horror movies to get you started.)

We made a beautiful bouquet of flowers

Summary: Mugi Yamane and Kinu Hachiya accidentally meet after the two 22-year-olds missed the last train from Meidaimae station. Although it takes them a little time to develop a relationship, the two eventually become a couple and settle into domestic bliss while navigating the city as young professionals.

Overview: Directed by Nobuhiro Doi, this sweet and low key drama is set over a five year period. With down-to-earth performances by Masaki Suda and Kasumi Arimura, we are spared from desperately grandiose gestures. The two actors play a refreshingly believable couple who experience all the joys and challenges that a typical young couple in Tokyo might encounter in real life.

Coming October 14, 2022

Romantic killer

Summary: For high schooler Anzu, there’s nothing like being home in her sweatpants with her cats, video games, and chocolate. Though she has no interest in pursuing anything that might interfere with her comfortable routine, her life falls apart when a tiny wayward wizard from a video game emerges and proclaims his intention to help Anzu find a boyfriend.

The Wizard plants Anzu in a dating sim universe devoid of her favorite pastimes but teeming with attractive young bachelors. Anzu is upset by this and decides to quash any romantic encounters that come her way so she can go back to snacking in her room like a normal teenager.

Overview: Fans of Aggretsuko will appreciate the slapstick humor and nonconformist heroine of this upcoming anime. Based on a manga by Wataru Momose, this riotous new anime is for everyone who has ever done it Hassled about her relationship status by overbearing relatives.

Coming October 27, 2022

Tiger & Rabbit 2

Summary: In a world where superheroes are managed, treated, and paid like elite athletes, veteran superhero Kotetsu not only battles villains, but must stay on top of things to avoid being dumped by the television company that employs him. To increase viewership, Kotetsu is paired with a young superhero named Barnaby Brooks (or “Bunny”) and is assigned to work with the newcomer to fight crime on camera.

overviewSet in a bustling metropolis that reimagines 1970s New York, this hugely popular series from Masayuki Ozaki and Keiichi Sato has delighted anime lovers with its unlikely duo. The show’s first two seasons are available on Netflix, but the second part of Tiger & Bunny 2 will premiere in the first week of October.

Spy x family

Summary: In order to complete a mission, a secret agent sets out to find a wife and adopt a child to disguise himself as an ordinary family man. Unbeknownst to him, the woman he chooses to be his wife is an assassin, while his adopted daughter turns out to be a telepath. Although each member of the trio is on their own mission, they soon adjust to their new dynamic and eventually become more like real family to each other than they originally expected.

Overview: Who knew a series about a cutthroat and a serious spy could be so heartwarming? Wry humor and stunning visuals aside, this 2022 anime series is packed with feel-good content that we all desperately need.
