As last season demonstrated, it’s entirely possible for a team to exceed preseason expectations and have an incredible season headed towards a championship game. Could Texas A&M wear this coat in 2023?

DraftKings Sportsbook unveiled a range of betting odds with just a few months standing in the way of the upcoming college football season. Included are a handful of predicted win totals, bet lines and of course championship odds for Power Five programs like Texas A&M.

There has been much talk of Maroon and White’s pivotal season on deck as their talented roster has high expectations of improving from a 5-7 campaign in 2022. But how confident are sportsbooks about the next Aggies success of the season?

With the ultimate goal of winning a national title, DraftKings lists Texas A&M with +5000 odds of winning in 2023, tied with Oklahoma for 15th best chance nationally.

Unsurprisingly, a handful of SEC teams are listed with better odds than the Aggies, including some annual consensus favorites. Georgia (+230), Alabama (+550), LSU (+1600) and Tennessee (+2800) are ahead of A&M in championship odds.

You might laugh at the thought of putting your trust in the Aggies ahead of the season. After all, A&M doesn’t get much credence when it comes to the 2023 preseason top 25 rankings. But then again, we’ve seen this story unfold in which an unexpected football program turns the regular season upside down and shocks the world by winning its ticket to the college football playoffs. In fact, we only saw it last season.

TCU had a championship rating of +23,000 at the start of the 2022 preseason, only to finish with a 13-2 record highlighted by the upset of the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines. The Horned Frogs would be throttled 65-7 by the No. 1 Bulldogs in the title game, but that’s a story for another day.

The fact is, while pre-season odds carry some weight, they can easily be fooled as long as a team plays with consistency and determination. The Aggies are bringing back a talented squad on both sides of the ball in 2023 and the addition of Bobby Petrino should bring some much-needed ingenuity to an offense that finished 101th by goals nationally.

With plenty of motivation in the bag and as long as they shore up some depth issues, the Aggies will be primed to be a darkhorse not only in the SEC but potentially in the college football playoff race as well.
