Dubai: Dubai marked the conclusion of the inaugural Dubai Esports Festival (DEF) 2022, held from November 9th to 20th at the Dubai Exhibition Center in Dubai Expo City.

The PUBG Global Championship 2022 kicked off on November 1 and saw 32 teams from four regions compete for a share of more than $2 million over the 12-day festival.

The festival bolstered Dubai’s position as a hub for technology, innovation, events and tourism, bringing together leading gamers, esports thought leaders and pop culture enthusiasts from around the world.

An exciting array of live events, concerts and pop culture activities welcomed esports enthusiasts and industry professionals over the 12 days. The most popular attractions of the festival were the highly anticipated PUBG Global Championship 2022, Initiate Summit, GameExpo, PopConME, Wegz live in concert, regional tournaments and Minecraft Esports Schools Clash.

DEF 2022 kicked off with the two-day Initiate Summit, a groundbreaking B2B learning and networking platform for professionals, developers and creatives across the esports and gaming industries.

The Summit was held in collaboration with Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC) and Dubai Media City, a member of TECOM Group, the knowledge partner of the event.

The oversubscribed first edition of the Summit welcomed over a thousand participants and more than 60 industry and esports thought leaders, highlighting Dubai’s appetite for growth in the esports sector.

GameExpo, PopConME

GameExpo and PopConME, organized in cooperation with DWTC and Alanza Trading, kicked off the second day as two of the main attractions of the festival. GameExpo and PopConME showcased some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Kit Harington (Jon Snow, Game of Thrones), Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Thor) and Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen, Green Arrow), among others.

The events also featured special meet-and-greet sessions, exclusive workshops, film screenings, international artists and creators, an artists’ avenue, a cosplay competition with a prize of Dh75,000 for the winner, gaming competitions and e-sports tournaments .

During the four-day GameExpo, three grassroots esports tournaments were held in collaboration with global gaming titles including Minecraft and Honor of Kings, where regional esports competitors and youth gamers took to the stage to show off their skills Prove and win prizes worth up to $25,000.

These included Minecraft Esports Schools Clash, which drew over 600 students from 12 schools in Dubai; Gamers HUB ME Regional online tournament with nearly 1,800 players competing for a Dh22,000 prize pool across a range of popular game titles including Fortnite, Brawl Stars, FIFA23, Valorant and Rocket League across multiple platforms; and Honor of Kings Regional Mobile Tournament, sponsored by the game’s publisher Tencent, as the first LAN tournament in Dubai with a $25,000 prize pool.

Closing the inaugural festival, popular Egyptian artist Wegz performed live in a concert at an electrifying musical showcase on November 19th.

Known for creating trap music since 2017 and rising to fame at the age of 19, the Alexandrian rap artist hosted an exciting show for fans and gaming enthusiasts to celebrate the conclusion of the successful first DEF 2022.

DEF 2022, as part of its first edition, was aimed at gamers, families, friends, art and music lovers, industry professionals and esports experts. The festival aims to unite and develop the gaming and e-sports communities in Dubai and the region.
